'Amerikana 3' - William Forsythe in Prague
Over past years National Theatre and State Opera in Prague have managed produce some wonderful peaces of ballet on its main stages. However, it seemed like modern production and modern dance doesn't really belong on these solemn and almost divine places. Such performances are usually left to small "New Stage". Except "Amerikana" - on the stage of State Opera recently premiered already next from the series of three inscenations.
This time three world-class choreographers built this sharp and neat show - Balanchine, William Forsythe and Jerome Robbins. First part by Balanchine gave me feeling of parody - in a good sense . Parody of "old" classical ballet. On one hand everything is neat, perfectly performed but on the other - the costumes, Tchaikovsky's music…
Then, I must really compliment William Forsythe's "old new" part. My aesthetic side experienced true orgasm - costumes, music, dance, moves, LIGHTs, dynamic… It was amazing and immensely short. I haven't known his work before and this was true discovery for me.
I cannot say the whole show was a HUGE success. I was there for the afternoon show so the audience was substantially composed from older people and families. Particularly older people were almost showing a disgust covered by polite clapping. But of course hands of others on the other hand showed appropriate excitement.
The last part by Robbins wasn't so much success for me, but I must admit it was at least funny and amusing. And I admire the female dancers for using high heels!
Finally I rate it very well and I hope we will be able to se a bit more from Neoclassical ballet on the boards of National theatre.
